CustomGPTs – Worth Your Time?

I spent 20 hours exploring & creating CustomGPTs. Was it worth it?

Here’s what I found…

Wait – What’s CustomGPT in 1 sentence?

• Like ChatGPT but anyone can tailor it with their own info (upload docs) & perform actions (collect email or search spreadsheet)

Here’s what I found when using GPTs in the marketplace:

• Many just felt like ChatGPT Plugins eg. logo creator, social media post generator, ask your PDF
• Some you can easily make it yourself (the text based ones)– this is why prompt engineering is still a valuable skill to learn
• Some could just be a website ie. convert file to different formats
• Some you still go into app after 1 prompt eg. Canva graphics requires customising in their app otherwise it’s too generic
• Some will ask you 2 questions & send email with report – could have just been a form
• Some require payment to access – what’s the point?

So I decided to make my own with actions. As a no code techie, I used Zapier to help with actions in my custom GPT. Here’s the tutorial.

But here’s what I found:

• It was quite tedious to set up
• Limited actions to choose from
• Didn’t always give the answer I was looking for eg. “Look up active subscribers this week in my spreadsheet”. ChatGPT asked me for the exact tag or go in and manually look it up yourself.🤨
• Alot of “asking for permission” (see below for canva) which got abit annoying as I wanted it to just do the work

• Only 1 action can be done at a time (see below). However, in my opinion it’s easier just to create a multi step automation that happens automatically without prompting

My take:

• Right now I’m not convinced that the idea of making money by creating a custom GPT is going to be as lucrative, easy or sustainable as it’s been hyped up to be
• It feels like some custom GPTs were created just for the sake of creating them but it isn’t as effective as you would think
• Easier just to create an automation outside of CustomGPT

What I would use it for currently:

• Internal GPT trained on your data to share with your team. eg. Convert your tiktok video scripts to linkedin posts using YOUR style of writing
